Inspired by Mary Roach’s book of the same name, Packing for Mars is a fictionalized docu-series about space exploration. Tuesdays at 9, AMC.

The premier episode of Packing for Mars pays tribute to a handful of firsts: The launch of Sputnik; the subsequent launch of Sputnik 2, carrying Laika, the dog; further astro-animals Ham, the chimp, and Felicette, the cat; additional lost souls whose existence are still left to speculation; Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space; and Sally Ride, the first American woman in space.
