It's All Psychedelic Down Under
As a music fan, it’s a great time to be alive. Whatever genre of music is your bag, there’s a group of people out there making it, appreciating it, reinventing it or appropriating it and better yet, it’s all at your fingertips.
At the moment if you’re a psych rock fan then Australia is your Mecca. Once upon a time Australia was known for Vegemite, kangaroos, backwards flushing toilets being unknowingly far away. Now, the land down under is known to many as the home of Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett, King Gizzard and Babe Rainbow
One Article I read that explaining the Australian rock music scene as ‘psych’ heavy is a bit of a cop out. What Australia has at the moment is a rock scene based in creativity and exploration. It’s far too simplistic to pigeon hole every rock band that uses guitars and synthesisers to make non-traditional sounding rock music as ‘psychedelic’. All the artists coming up from down under are so vastly different from each other that to label them under the same genre is absurd.
However, whether you want to call it psych rock, psych pop, shoegaze, roogaze, stoner rock, synth rock or even polka we can be thankful that these music mafias have given rise to a scene that’s developed in Australia and will hopefully see many more emerging bands take to the international stage. Bands like The Babe Rainbow, Parading, Orb, Fierce Mild and Lowtide are definitely worth listening to.
